[edit] Overview

Established in 2008, Sentinels Online Gaming has been a recognized group in every online game we have particpated in. Though we are listed here as an RP-PvP Guild, it should be noted that we would classify ourselves as Lite RP. No one is required to RP. We simply support it and our members who enjoy experiencing this aspect of the game. Perhaps the best way to understand what our group is all about is to browse our charter.

The Charter of the Sentinels

I. Introduction:

The fate of an entire guild should not rest on the shoulders of one person, nor should the decisions that affect the entire guild be left solely to one favored group. A successful guild is a brother- and sisterhood whose members understand how they can work together. - Kurgan & Dagothar, founding fathers of the Sentinels

The goal of the Sentinels is to provide a fun and relaxing environment where adults can find like-minded individuals to enjoy the multi-player online gaming experience.

II. Founding Principles

Keep it Fun: It's a Game!

The Sentinels are a Brother- and Sisterhood of mature adults aged 18+, united in a desire to cooperate, enjoy and assist each other in a shared MMO gaming experience. The Sentinels can be found in many of today's most popular online games with plans to continue to move into other highly-anticipated games as well to meet the desires and needs of our membership.

The Sentinels have become known as a guild with an honorable reputation among the Massively Multiplayer Gaming Community. As such, we expect all members to not only be courteous to each other, but to our fellow gamers in other guilds and games as well. Where the game allows, Sentinels will never engage in “camping” and “griefing” of other players. To the contrary, Sentinels are expected to promote our hard earned reputation by helping unknown players and showing them we are a guild to be counted on to promote the spirit of the game.

While we strive to maintain an honorable existence, be assured we will rise up and take arms against those who do not share our values; who prey upon characters significantly lower level; or upon characters who have no possibility of defending themselves. We aim to be the guild that like-minded guilds align themselves with; and the guild that non-like-minded guilds target.

The Sentinels above all, want to keep gaming what it is intended for: fun. Guilds, rules, and structure are an added element which serve to enhance the game play of people. But when being part of a guild becomes laborious; when it starts to feel more like a second job then it's no longer fun anymore. Our goal is to create & maintain such a structure that we are able to keep the fun in the guild while avoiding over-zealous, senseless rules that do not reflect our founding principles.

Being an adult guild, we expect all our members to treat each other in an honorable, courteous, and respectful manner at all times. While we acknowledge that human relations are never perfect and that tensions between members will arise from time-to-time, we prefer that conflicts are handled at the lowest possible level, with officer intervention only when all other options have been exhausted. Also, we will not tolerate "unnecessary drama" from our members: while we will always strive to protect the rights of our individual members, we will not allow any single person to hinder the enjoyment of the collective guild.

The Sentinels are dedicated to maintaining fairness & equality within the guild ranks. We pledge to always strive to place the right person into the right positions; no unearned privilege will be given to those undeserving just because "they are friends with the officers." To that extent, any member in good standing is encouraged to volunteer to assist with the day to day running of the guild. Officers of the guild will determine where the current need is and offer assistance in placing the member in that spot if it’s what they are looking for. Such positions could be, but are not limited to raid and team leadership; membership and organization; web development; forum moderation; in-game assistance; etc.

The Sentinels are dedicated to the cause of professionalism and creating an environment that will foster great relations through cooperation with allies, honorable treatment of neutrals, and merciless treatment of enemies. The Sentinels exists to serve its membership, and its officers will uphold the highest standards and unwavering dedication to the service of its members.

III. Sentinel Membership Rights and Responsibilities

Rights

All members of the Sentinels have the right to enjoy all the benefits accruing to a Sentinel in any game played by other Sentinels. All members have free and open access to the decision process for the guild, principally utilizing the Citizens' Forum and Senate, but also by PM, Ventrilo, email, through other Guild Forums, and any other means available. Guild leaders at all levels are obligated to hear the comments of all members, and respond to them within a reasonable time frame.

All members of the Sentinels are afforded full use of the forums and Vent server as afforded to their current rank within the guild.

Once a Sentinel, Always a Sentinel: Membership in the Sentinels is not dependent on playing a specific game, and upon joining our guild all members will always be considered a part of the family unless they wish to move on to another community. Any member who has no game or forums activity will not be expelled from the guild, but will be placed in an inactive status (Retired) until which time they decided to become active again.

Responsibilities

· Treat other Sentinels with respect. · Adhere to the in-game ethic espoused by the Sentinels. Generally speaking, that is to treat other players with respect and honor, unless acceptable role-play conditions dictate otherwise.

· Maintain the guild Forum profile with all mandatory fields. This includes the names of all characters (mains and alts) played by the member in each game.

· Participate in the membership process. This includes watching for new Pledges both in the New Applications Forum of the Recruiting Office and in-game; welcoming them; gaming with them; conversing with them, and assisting them.

IV. Guild Structure

As stated above, rules and structure are an added element which serve to enhance game play of the guild's membership. Listed below is an explanation of the ranks and the structure (forums) of the Sentinels and the policies used to enforce our founding principles.

Ranks

Following are our ranks as well as an explanation for each. These ranks and positions will be used in each game in which the Sentinels have a presence, as long as the in-game guild structure permits.

Pledge:

This is the rank given to all new applicants of the Sentinels. A pledge has access to only the most basic sections of the guild forums. A pledge must complete a trial period to be accepted into the guild. Pledges should be as active as possible during this trial period, in whatever game they are playing, on voice-chat, and on the forums, so that members can get to know them and be better able to determine that the pledge is Sentinels material. This also allows the pledge to get to the know the Sentinels better and determine if this is the guild they are looking for.

Legionnaire:

This is the rank awarded to new members of the guild. A Legionnaire has expanded access to guild operations. Legionnaires form the core group of the guild membership and are awarded a seat in the Citizens Forum, where they have a voice in the operating procedures of the guild.

Decurion:

Decurions are Legionnaires who have shown themselves to be a "cut above" the general membership. Appointment to Decurion is not to be confused with an officer’s position; rather it is more a position of Honor within the guild. Appointment to Decurion can be requested, per an offer to assist in day to day duties in the guild, or it could be awarded in recognition for outstanding deeds both in and out of the games in which the Sentinels have a presence.

Centurion:

This rank is awarded to Officers of the Guild. Centurions can be appointed from all ranks with the exception of Pledge. With this rank comes the responsibility to donate time to guild administration. Such activities include, but are not limited to Recruiting, Alliance Liaison, Guild Activities, Mentoring Pledges, etc.

Centurions are awarded a seat in the Senate Forum where they have input into the day to day administration of the guild. Just as with the Decurion appointment, a member in good standing can volunteer to take on the duties of a Centurion and as such, will be placed in a specific position as a guild officer. Centurions are expected to execute these duties on their own initiative, and to follow the rules and structure of the guild when called for.

This rank is dependent on active guild leadership. A Centurion who is unable or is no longer willing to actively lead will be appointed Decurion.

Tribune:

As we are a multi-gaming guild, a Tribune is necessary to have an “official” guild presence in an online gaming system. Appointments to Tribune can come from any of the official guild ranks, (with the exception of Pledge). The Tribune will be responsible for the in-game formation and administration of the guild. He/she will also be responsible to oversee the Centurions and Decurions in their roles as they pertain to the specific game they are playing in.

When a Tribune no longer wishes to play the game where he/she was appointed Tribune, he/she will be appointed Centurion or Decurion as appropriate, and the Guild Council will select a new Tribune.

Proconsul:

The rank of Proconsul is the highest position of leadership in the guild. The Proconsuls are expected to work together to constantly ensure the smooth running of the guild, as well as look for ways to enhance the experience and enjoyment of all members of the Sentinels. The Pro Consuls have a seat in the High Council forum.

Consul:

The title of Consul is an appointment awarded to a Proconsul based upon his/her dedication, desire, and availability to sit in the highest seat within the Sentinels' organization. The term of the Consul is not limited, but can end when he/she feels they can no longer carry out the duties or with a vote among the Proconsuls when they feel it is time to pass Consulship on to another. The Consul is directly advised and assisted by the Proconsuls, who are the equal of the Consul. The most important role of the Consul is to make the final decision in any situation where the High Council is unable to come to a consensus.

Guild Forums

The Citizens' Forum:

Here, Legionnaires and Decurions will discuss matters of governance of the Sentinels, request things of the Senate and the High Council, and also enjoy the fruits of full membership of the Sentinels. Members are encouraged to voice their opinions and propose guidelines, policy, procedures or suggest amendments to be considered by the Senate and the High Council.

The Senate

The Senate will consist of Centurions and Tribunes. Senators have the power to propose policy, guidelines, and will act as advisors to the High Council. The Senate is also responsible, for identifying and proposing candidates for appointment to Centurion, as well as proposing appointments to Tribune to lead the way into new games.

The High Council:

The High Council, consisting of the Tribunes and Proconsuls, is led by the Consul, who is responsible for daily decisions and actions in the Sentinels. The High Council will monitor and consider any and all suggestions and requests brought forth by the Citizens' Forum and the Senate.

V. Guild Drama

As stated in the founding principles, “The goal of the Sentinels is to provide a fun and relaxing environment where adults can find like minded individuals to enjoy the multi-player online gaming experience.” Unfortunately, guild drama rears its ugly head even in the best intentioned of guilds.

When guild members engage or are suspected of engaging in behavior detrimental to the Sentinels, there are steps to take to make them aware that their behavior is not acceptable.

To ensure Guild Drama has the lowest impact possible on the guild, the High Council, when notified of the situation, will meet and discuss the matter with all parties involved. After hearing all sides of the situation, the High Council will determine a course of action to be taken and advise the parties involved as to the course of action to be taken. These actions can include as little as a warning to the individual or as strong as removal from the guild.

Upon request, all such reported situations as well as their adjudication will be available to any member of the guild, ranked Legionnaire or above.
