Irrena Alfinder in Droughtlands:

It's not clear whether the Convocation was a spell cast in some internal conflict, or an experiment gone awry. What is clear is that all the Ethians near the blast vanished. The ground split asunder, the rivers went dry, and Eth was laid to waste. Now it is up to archeologists and historians like myself to discover the cause of this great calamity.

In the city of Redoubt, the high Ethian council prepared a spell which would elevate them to godhood. After years of assembling the components, the well of endless power was within their grasp. The tower of Redoubt would draw the souls of Eth and amplify them, making men into gods.

But in their arrogance, they could not sense a betrayal. An agent of Maelforge corrupted the device that held the spirits. Instead of empowering the sorcerers, the force of a million souls was unleashed upon the land, destroying the cradle of Eth empire.[1]
